Evaluation Tools for Tolerance Management

Gütersloh, July 2000

The second meeting of working group II in 2000 took place at the Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh. The meeting was primarily devoted to working in sub-groups built in New York (April 2000) under the following working titles:

1. Providing Evaluation Resources
2. Tolerance Reports
3. Website and Database
4. Educational Concepts

The four sub-groups discussed material and papers prepared by individual participants according to a working plan inaugurated in New York for the respective projects. The plenary sessions in-between made sure that information was passed on from one group to the other. In addition the sub-groups tied in their respective projects to the Tolerance Report and the closely connected Tolerance Data Base which was presented in the first version by Thomas Henschel. Group members made suggestions for changes which will be taken into consideration.

The Tolerance Report group worked on structural and editorial changes of the first report drafts handed in by the network's NGOs.

The Evaluation group discussed materials from the respective countries and programs as well as general questions of evaluation. Before conceptualizing a "Tool Kit for Evaluation" addressing Human Rights, Democracy and Tolerance Education in particular, the group decided to empirically survey the existing approaches in the field.

The members of the working group Educational Concepts compared different concepts underpinning the project of democracy education and thought about a workshop making trainers more aware of educational pitfalls and dilemmas they might encounter in their daily educational work.

The meeting was enriched by a day excursion to the EXPO 2000 in Hannover.
