"Tolerance matters"
New publication of the Network to be expected for early 2003
by Katrin Uhl
Members of the networks working
group on the so called tolerance reports met in Munich March
11-13 for one of their last editorial sessions. Over the course
of the last two years network member organizations have contributed
case studies examining the situation of education for democracy
in their respective countries.
With
the subgroups editing process nearly finished, the individual
case studies are now set against an analytical framework that allows
for a comparison of the country-specific situations and the educational
responses, as well as the identification of the fundamental issues
in the field of education for democracy, human rights and tolerance.
The comparative case studies will be supplemented by theoretical
essays, tying the reports to the current debate in the field. With
its combination of theory and practice reports, the publication
aims to explore the complexities, paradoxes and contradictions inherent
in attempting to use education as a mechanism to increase understanding
across boundaries and the promotion of democracy. Under the title
"Tolerance matters - International Educational Approaches
the collection will be published early in 2003.
