The Anti-Defamation League
- A World of Difference® Institute

In 1985, ADL and WCVB-TV in Boston initiated the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE‚ campaign to combat prejudice, promote democratic ideals, and strengthen pluralism. Its success is now an international institute with diversity education programs utilized by schools, universities, corporations, and community and law enforcement agencies throughout the United States and abroad.

At the heart of the Institute’s program is A CLASSROOM OF DIFFERENCE, developed to address diversity issues in the pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school communities. Programs include workshops for teachers, support staff, classified staff, administrators, students, and family members.

The centerpiece of the A CLASSROOM OF DIFFERENCE‚ teacher training program is the Anti-Bias Teacher/Student Study Guide. Materials and lessons are presented and utilized during the full-day training program through role play and simulation exercises for teachers, educators and administrators.

A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE‚ Institute programs provide practical, experiential, hands-on training with skills to challenge prejudice and discrimination, to foster intergroup understanding and to equip participants to live and work successfully and civilly in a diverse environment. The programs are designed to enable participants to:

  • provide an understanding of prejudice and discrimination and the harm they inflict upon individuals, communities, and society;

  • aid individuals in recognizing their own and others’ biases and to take personal responsibility for combating prejudice and discrimination;

  • challenge the stereotypes and biases that inhibit intergroup understanding;

  • provide techniques and develop strategies to challenge all forms of prejudice and discrimination;

  • equip people with the necessary skills to successfully live and work within a diverse society; and

  • identify factors that contribute to the promotion of intergroup understanding and successful coalition building.

Since 1985, the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE‚ Institute has had multiple achievements in the United States:

  • Trained more than 350,000 elementary and secondary school teachers in public, private, and parochial school settings have participated in the A CLASSROOM OF DIFFERENCE‚ program.

  • Fostered a cohesive campus at more than 135 colleges and universities that have hosted the A CAMPUS OF DIFFERENCE‚ program, while 400 more have used ADL anti-bias educational materials for the same purpose.

  • Conducted workplace diversity training for over 100,000 adult workers employed in more than 100 corporations, government agencies or small business in the public and private sectors through the A WORKPLACE OF DIFFERENCE‚ program.

  • Developed a law enforcement diversity training program currently being implemented by the F.B.I. and police departments across the U.S.

Internationally, A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE‚ Institute programs operate in Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Luxembourg, and Japan.
