Perspectives in overcoming violence

A seminar by the Ecomenical Youth Council in Europe

14th – 21st September 2003
Moscow, Russia

Profile of participants

The target group for this event are young people and youth leaders with interest in the issue of overcoming violence. Previous experience with the issue is welcome but not absolutely necessary. We very much encourage applications from persons already working or intending to work on the issue.

Aims of the seminar

The International Planning Committee members defined the following aims:

  • To identify and raise awareness, why and what type of violence are prevalent in today’s society

  • To understand where we are part of a violent culture

  • To develop common strategies for overcoming violence

  • To develop respect for the "otherness” of my neighbour

  • To identify what frames and structures we need in order to prevent violence

  • To be exposed to and informed about actions that are already taking place to overcome violence

Methods

Many interactive methods will be used in order to realise the aims of the seminar, these include role-plays, plenary sessions and input from lecturers. An excursion will be arranged to assess the implications of violence on the present situation of the most vulnerable members of Russian society. A second excursion will provide time for sightseeing in Moscow. Group discussion will play an important role, and participants will be asked to prepare the following, to ensure the smooth running of the event. Some participants from ecumenical networks outside Europe will hopefully be with us who will be asked to present case studies relevant to the issue. Last but not least the group will enjoy the social life! With an International Banquet, Russian Cultural Evening, European Cultural Evening and Farewell Party, as well as many opportunities to get to know fellow participants.

Fee

The participation fee for the seminar will be 200 Euros, including accommodation, meals, programme and excursion.

Venue

The venue in Moscow has yet to be confirmed and will be communicated to the selected participants with the letter of acceptance. Participants will be accommodated in single sex dormitories of approximately 4 people.

Languages

The language of the seminar will be English; it might be possible to provide a translation into Russian for some parts of the seminar, however not everything can be translated due to a lack of financial resources.

Deadline for Applications

Please send all your application form to the EYCE Office (address above) as soon as possible. The absolutely latest deadline for receiving applications will be

27th June 2003

Due to the very long and difficult visa application procedures for entering Russia, this deadline CANNOT be extended whatsoever.
