Susanne Ulrich was born 1961 in Dsseldorf. She studied Science
of Administration (including Politics, Law, Economy, History and
Sociology) at the University of Konstanz. Her final diploma examination
focussed on the consequences of German politics of culture.
From 1987 - 1992 she worked as a consultant for international youth
exchange at the German Kolping Society Cologne. From 1990 to 1992
Susanne Ulrich was a consultant for education on developing countries
policy at the association for social and development aid of the
Kolping Society. In the context of this work she made contacts across
Europe, overseas and especially Israel. From 1992-1995 she was freelancing
in Seminar and Cultural work.
Since 1995 she has been employed at the Center for Applied Policy
Research (C.A.P) at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political
Science, Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich. She is responsible
for the Project Education for Democracy and Tolerance. Together
with colleagues she worked out a concept and a definition of tolerance.
She also developed special exercises for teaching democracy and
tolerance. Susanne works with different target groups, for example
with teachers, students, administrators and police-officers. The
Group«s own proposals are complemented by methods and experiences
provided by partners from all over the world. These programs have
been adapted for the use in the educational sector in Germany. Two
examples are the program "betzavta" from Israel and the
program `A World of Difference« from the Anti Defamation League
in New York. Susanne also made a film about behaviour in conflict
situations for German television.
In addition to the adapted programs, she created together with
a team of experts a program for teaching democracy and tolerance:
"Achtung (+) Toleranz" (which means Attention/Respect
(+) Tolerance). The aim of this specific program teaching communication
is not to get rhetorical knowledge for convincing or dominating
other people but to learn partnership and dialogue competences.
Since 1999 Susanne is also an active member of the International
Network Education for Democracy, Human Rights and Tolerance.
