U.S. Agency for Internation Development (USAID)

USAID is an independent federal government agency that extends assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. The agency works in different areas of development: Economic growth and development, population, environment, humanitarian assistance, education, and democracy. In the field of democratization USAID has taken a leading role in promoting and consolidating democracy worldwide. They identified four strategic objectives in the democracy sector: Rule of law, elections, civil society, governance. The agency sponsors general democracy activities in each of the four regions (Africa, Asia/Near East, Europe, Latin America/Carribbean), as well as programs focusing on specific countries or groups of countries. In addition, the USAID Office of Transition Initiatives operates in over a dozen countries to advance peaceful, democratic change to build stable democracies.
